The Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has released an updated communication toolkit for its abolition of the counterpart campaign

From 8 June 2015, DVLA will no longer issue the paper counterpart to the photocard driving licence.  This means from that date, existing paper counterparts will no longer be valid and the DVSA is advising drivers to destroy their counterpart after this date. Drivers who hold a paper only driving licence (issued before the photocard was introduced in 1998) remain valid and should not be destroyed.

The campaign materials provide targeted messages to specific customer segments, notably:

  1. hiring a vehicle; and
  2. professional driving/driving for a living

The additional information contains advice for individuals and businesses who currently check the counterpart of their employees or customers. The materials also offer advice to people who may need to provide evidence of their driver record after 8 June 2015.

New courts to help traffic flow

The Government is to set up dedicated traffic courts in England and Wales to free up magistrates courts blockage following a pilot programme in nine areas.

The specialised courts will prosecute some of the 500,000 minor motoring offences that pass through the courts each year. Every police area is expected to have one of the courts by April 2014, hearing up to 160 cases a day.

Jurisdiction will be limited to the 90% of cases where motorist admit guilt - drivers who plead not guilty will still be dealt with by magistrates as before.
